Wincanton Wheelers was founded in 2017 by a group of cycling enthusiasts to provide the town and region with a fun, social cycling club that welcomes everyone.
We are not experts by any means, but are an eclectic mix of cyclists of varying ages and abilities who share the common love of cycling.

Our aim is to include all forms of cycles including Road, Mountain and Electric Bikes.
The purpose is to embrace the joy of cycling together.

Although a new club, we have various plans to make sure all interests are
catered for. These Include the following:

Meet Some Of Our Members
Having previously been a member of a different club, at which I never really felt comfortable or confident enough to ride out with on my own, when the opportunity arose for me to be part of creating a new cycle club in Wincanton, with the aim of ensuring a more inclusive club I was more than happy to be involved.
The very sincere friendliness of the few at the conception of the club has greatly helped improve my confidence.  I was encouraged to start creating routes and lead Saturday rides, and as a result now tend to be ride leader for most Saturday rides.  The camaraderie of the club is outstanding.  Nobody is left behind, nobody is felt to be an outsider and everybody, no matter their ability, is encouraged every pedal of the way by those more experienced and fitter.  I have recently registered with British Cycling as a Welfare Officer to ensure the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults and will be considering a coaching course to enable the club to become more involved within the local community.  My aim is to also improve my fitness to enable me to join the longer, faster Sunday rides in the future... one day!

"Basic social cycling, with the aim to be fit enough to cycle to work regularly not just for fitness but for my carbon footprint."
I joined the club because of a few recommendations and because I did it as part of my DofE.

I thoroughly enjoy the club as everybody is friendly and everybody has a good laugh, and there is a lot of competition for signs.

From being a member I like to be able to do longer rides and ride at a faster pace.

I have definitely achieved both of these because of the club.

"Before joining the club I went on small rides by myself and wasn't confident on doing long rides."
I joined to make new friends and expand my cycling abilities
I really enjoy the fact that we have a big social side to the club and that we are open to all ages and cycling abilities. I hope to be able to represent the club more over the coming years at races and time trials.

"Very little experience before joining the club mostly riding on my own and commuting ."
Joined club to enjoy riding with other cyclists to have good rides and cafe stops . Have taken first step into racing in a time trial and like to do more racing in the next year.  The club is great to ride with and very friendly. Glad I joined

"Just riding to keep fit ."
A friend brought me a long for a ride and everyone was so friendly and welcoming that I stayed!
Everyone is welcome, no one is made to feel that they are too slow to join in. I like that inclusiveness, even now I'm not slow anymore. Also that there are rides on every weekend and mid-week, year-round. And there's always cake! The club puts on things like velodrome sessions and goes racing too, and encourages us all to have a go, which improves my riding and pushes my boundaries.

Previous cycling experience:

"I had been riding about a year."
I had been looking for a while for a club that would suit
someone like me.
As this club stated that they were prepared to include all levels of abilities I decided to give it a go.I found there was a great mix of Guys and Gals with an age mix from teens to 70 year olds.
Being one of the oldest road bike riders has not been a problem . It works well for me with the shorter social Saturday rides that have a good mix of riders  with great stops for refreshments and friendly encouragement and banter along the way. Longer and quicker rides happen on Sundays so there is something for everyone.
Looking to the future my aims are to push my distances up a little, maybe a longer charity ride next year or perhaps there maybe a chance to include some of the roads that I know well that I have yet to cycle with the club but most of all to enjoy the good company that the club provides.

"I have always enjoyed cycling.
Back in the 80s I was a member of another local club in it's infant days but mostly I cycled with friends over many years."
